Divorced parents losing control

Question

I am a single father of twin girls that are 7 yrs. old and are in the second grade. They are doing fine in school. One of my daughters is developing a fear of me being out of her sight and wants to sleep in my bed every night. The girls, most nights want to split up, one staying with me and the other staying with their mother, who lives close by. I am trying to change this behavior and at the same time find a way to keep her from being afraid. The one with the most fear has for several years expressed her unhappiness that her mother and I don't live together. This unhappiness is often expressed with whining and a certain amount of defiance, expecially to her mother. Any suggestions? Many thanks for your advice.
