3 year old : Default Excuse when wants to get out of something

Question

I am recently divorced and my 3 1/2 year old son has started whining, saying, "I miss Daddy!" whenever he doesn't want to do something and/or gets in trouble. He also often throws a fit and will say, "I'm too tired!" For example, when leaving a friend's house if he wanted to stay and play I tell him to no, that it's time to get in the car and he needs to say "thank you" and "goodbye" to his friends. He then starts to whine, "I'm too tired! I miss Daddy" and won't thank or say goodbye to his friends. All the way home he whines these phrases over and over. What do I do? Ignore? Discipline? Both?
