3 yo wets bed when he wakes up

Question

Hi - I have potty trained my son using "Toilet Training Without Tantrums" almost a year ago. He has been fully potty trained for almost a year (trained by 2 yrs old and now he just turned 3), including no bed wetting.

Recently, he started preschool (about 4 weeks now) - and then, in the last 2 weeks, he wakes up in the morning and pees in his crib. He doesn't wet his bed at night, only when he wakes up.

The book addresses these types of relapses in pp. 110-115. I understand that the preschool may have triggered it. However, the book only discusses where the child is wetting his bed unintentionally during deep sleep and during the night. This is not the case with our child.

I could not find anywhere in the book where it addresses that the child specifically wakes up and pees instead of waiting for the parent to get him.

His bed is a crib and he has a blanket and a pillow. He sleeps in cotton underwear, shorts and a short sleeve t-shirt.

I should also mention, he did it a few times last week, then it stopped for 4 days or so and now it has started again for the last 3 days.

I can't figure out why he is doing this and what to do about it. I've tried telling him not to do it, and that hasn't worked. I also cut off liquids by 7pm (goes to bed at 8pm) and I have been peeing him more often in the afternoon. Tonight, I am going to tell him to call for mommy if he has to pee, but I'm not sure he will understand me and know how to do that.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
