An Active Little Boy

Question

Our 4 1/2 year old (first) son is enrolled in the junior kindergarten class at Charlotte Christian. Previously he attended Calvary Child Development, also a faith based pre-school, with little difficulty. Since his transition, he has exhibited the following behavior/traits:
1. Acting more agressive with smaller children, not in a mean-spirited fashion but still more so than the other child is comfortable with, said conduct escalating to the point of school meetings;
2. Being the boss and in control of an activity with other children; and,
3. Distracting easily when spoken to by an adult or when a program occurs, although he can assemble a 100 piece puzzle in a quiet setting.
For item 1, we have attempted time out and spanking discipline, though this was provided probably too long after the incident.
He does better with older children. Its also noted that he gets frustrated and will abandon an activity if its too challenging.
We have extremely little TV exposure and do have lots of quality family time.
We will consult our pediatrician as to any ADD and/or ADHD.
This has proven exceptionally difficult and emotional for his Mom/my wife.
We welcome any insight/recommendations.
