Adoption questions

Question

We have adopted 2 sons. They are 5 and 3 years old, and they came to us as babies (6 months and 3 1/2 months). They have never had any family member visits, or anyone in their lives other than my husband and I.
They are part of our church community and everyone knows about our testimony of adoption.
The biological mom of one of them passed away, and we have contact with the other biological mom. Both dads were unknown.
What’s the best age and way to explain adoption to them?
Is it recommended to show them pictures of their biological moms and introduce them as a their bio mom? Or just call them by their names?
How do we know if they’re understanding the concept of adoption?

Thank you so much!
