12 yo obsessed with video game (fancy that!)

Question

I have a bright, decently responsible 12 year old finishing 6th grade. Great grades, no need to monitor homework, wants to do the right thing. He's more emotionally volatile these days, to be expected. I'd like ideas on setting boundaries/limits on handheld gaming. He plays one game (Clash of Clans), is in a "safe group" and loves it. It doesnt cause bad attitudes or negative "retreating" either. However, if left to himself, he'd be on morning, afternoon and night. I don't want to continually monitor but have a way he can self monitor...amt of time/day or week, set timer to keep on track...any ideas? Thanks for your help!
