14 yo video game addict...again

Question

Our 14 year old son is suffering from depression and anxiety. We are talking with the principal at school and shed sees no depressive behaviors, but some possible social anxiety. We have suggested to our son that he get more exercise and spend less time playing video games and watching TV. He "Hates" sports...always has but now seems to be withdrawing more into his computer worlds and trying to close us out.
I am fearful that if we seek consoling, they will recommend medications. I would like to know from your own history and experiences how you feel about placing teens on meds, do they work or should that be used as a last resort. Our plan of action is lay out a plan for our son, that he will take up rowing and give 100%, if he wants to have the freedom to have a computer and video games. Making hi have balance in his life...we have been parenting from fear of making his situation worse, which I feel is making the situation worse?? Any generalized thoughts or suggestions/ideas would be greatly appreciated.
