Fostering Responsible Decision Making

Question

Our 11 y/o son is in 5th grade at a private Christian school and we pay for him to have weekly trumpet lessons. He doesn't really practice though. I told him that if he wants to keep having mom and dad pay for trumpet lessons, then he needs to practice 3 times a week for 20 minutes each time. He has 6 weeks to accomplish this and if within the 6 weeks he gets 3 strikes (a strike is given if he doesn't practice 3x that week), then we're done paying for lessons. He does enjoy playing and is getting pretty good. I emailed the trumpet teacher who was a band teacher in public school for 27 years and now 10 years in private school about the deal I made with our son. Based on what I've read in Rosemond books, I believe the deal I made is fair. The teacher wrote back in his experience a reward system would be better and I disagree. The teacher is an amazing person and truly respect them, which is why I thought maybe he has a point? Thoughts? Thanks!
