3 year old : Is there a different approach to potty training with a developmentally delayed child?

Question

I have a three and a half year old son who has been diagnosed with global developmental delay and low muscle tone. He has been in physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy since a very early age. I was told by some therapists that he would potty train at a late age due to his low muscle tone so I have held off until now. However, recently his therapists and pediatrician have said that they think he is ready. I began potty training him a week ago and have had little success. I have read your book "Toilet Training Without Tantrums". Would you follow this exact method given his delay and low tone?
