4 year old Lies

Question

Our 4 year old grandson has started lying. Sometimes it seems it is just fantasy or wishful thinking. Other times it is not owning up to a falsehood, even under threat of consequences. I'm very concerned because his father, 44 years old, started lying around that age and we apparently didn't handle it very well since as to this day he still lies.
I picked up my grandson from pre school today. This evening his mother called to see if he had eaten anything while with me. I told her yes. He had told her no he hadn't had anything to eat while with me. She told him she was calling me to check, and gave him an opportunity to change his story. He insisted no. I want to stop this before it goes any further. Thank you so very much for any guidance in this matter.
