4 year old lying

Question

My 4 year old daughter has a problem with lying. She calls it "tricking" us, but none the less, it is lying. There have been 2 times in the past 3 months we were looking for a toy and she said she didn't know where it was, but then came with the toy she had been hiding several minutes later. Her lies are small ones, but still a major concern for me. Today, I asked what she was doing, she said, "nothing, and there's nothing on my hands." She had been digging dried candle wax out of a candle and putting it on her hands. When I asked her to tell me the truth, she refused to talk. I told her she would spend the rest of the day in her room, and I would remove her possessions, she still refuses to talk. At this point I am simply asking her to tell me she is sorry and she will not lie anymore, but she will not budge. Any recommendations in how I can nip this in the bud? My fear is this habitual lying will continue and escalate through the years.
