Adopting Older Children

Question

My wife and I are trying to adopt older children from Ethiopia. Our Christian faith-based adoption agency required us to study lessons in a video training course called Because They Waited which is very adamant about (among other things) attachment. The book we were required to read is called The Connected Child.

I would not follow most of the advice in these training tools for a newborn (which we've raised) or and adopted infant (which we've also raised) but I recognize that adopting older children may present real traumas and hardships that need to be overcome. Are there any adjustments/alternate strategies to dealing with at risk children 6 years and older who may have been abused and neglected?

All the best,
