Are childhood behavior disorders "real"?

Question

Do you believe there are any children who actually do have diagnosable behavioral conditions? A year ago, my child was practically non-functional, showing symptoms of OCD, ODD, Aspberger's, Bipolar Disorder, etc. The final diagnosis was Dysfunctional Mood Disruptive Disorder. After weeks of semi-inpatient therapy and some heavy-duty meds, he's doing much better. I'm just curious as to whether you believe any of the disorders children are currently diagnosed with really exist and, if they do, how you tell the difference between the "real" ones and the ones that can be solved by consistent discipline.
