autism spectrum disorder

Question

My daughter has received special education for speech delay the past several years. She is 8 years old and in second grade. The school recently evaluated her again and believe that she has autism spectrum disorder. I was very hesitant to allow them to label her with this and it turned out she met the criteria for extra help with her speech delay so we held off on the autism label. She certainly does have issues, particularly social, she only has one friend and the kids don't care for her because she says inappropriate things and is very bossy. She also has trouble in math but is a good reader. They also said she has a very low IQ which I don't put a lot of stock in as I don't think those tests are that accurate. In researching this disorder I was surpised to find that she does exhibit a lot of the symptoms. These symptoms were not typical of the definition of "autism" I had read about many years ago. I am going to have her indpendently evaluated but just wanted to know your thoughts on this.
