CAN BOYS HAVE BOYFRIENDS, MOMMY?

Question

We are a traditional Christian family with all heterosexual family members and children at a supposedly moderate private school. At a family 85th birthday dinner, my 6 year old son asked if “boys can have boyfriends and girls can have girlfriends.” I was completely unprepared for this question, as was the rest of our family. We dodged the question, but I feel the need to discuss the matter before he learns something somewhere else that contradicts our worldview. How do I explain this in an age appropriate way? Does this mean I need to tell him about marriage and the birds and the bees too? My sister in law said I need to tell him about Adam and Eve, procreation and marraige first. It feels too young!
