3 yo questions about death

Question

Over the past year my (then 3 year old) son has attended two funerals, one for his great grandfather, and another for a young child in our church. He knows the part of the catechism about what happens to souls and bodies when someone dies, and he has a good outlook on heaven. Recently one of his first questions when hearing about someone new (people I know or historical figures in our books) is "are they dead?" or "are they in Heaven?" He doesn't know it, yet, but his great-grandmother, who he's pretty close to, is not expected to live much longer. With as much as he already thinks about death, I would like to shield him from her death as much as possible, but I really don't know how to handle this with him. Any advice would be appreciated.
