Tantrums when away from home

Question

My daughter, 33 months old, had the meltdown of her life today. She is a very strong willed, highly intense child.

I need some tools in my tool belt for how to manage/discipline her when we are not at home and she looses all self control. At home, I can send her to the laundry room to "cool off" and that works pretty well. She seems to need to be alone for a bit to calm down ... If I try to console or reason with her she just gets more and more out of control.

I'm not really sure what set her off today but she became very angry while in the store. We immediately left...I tried to get her in the car seat, she refused physically. She was just grasping for control of anything (I want my lunch bag or I want the sucker or telling me where to stand). She was hitting me, trying to hit her 4 month old brother, screaming at the top of her lungs....out of control.

What do you do??? How do you discipline in the moment? I was trying to keep her safe as she was angry and impulsive...trying to protect her brother...this went on for an hour! Help!
