Sleep Issues w/Six-Year-Old

Question

Our six-year-old has never been a great sleeper. (dr heard wheezing in his lungs around 13 months so I don't think any amount of CIO would have worked; he had breathing issues for quite a long time off and on). Wheezing is not an issue now; he now stays in bed at bedtime but still has issues sleeping all night and will usually get up at least once a night, 3-4 times a week to go to the bathroom and then feels the need to have someone take him back to bed but sometimes gets up 2-3 times - once this week it was 4:47, then 5:40, and for the day around 6:15. (spouse and I are up at 5 am so anything after that is not a big deal but child should still be sleeping longer/later) Spouse usually takes the brunt of the overnight wake-ups but I still think it's a habit to break. Child claims a nightlight would help - I'm afraid he'll see shadows and get scared giving him another reason to get up - and if he hasn't had one yet why start now? There is a nightlight in the bathrooms. He can not be easily bribed. Ideas?
