3 yo wants to be carried

Question

My almost three year old generally well-behaved son has recently started insisting that I carry him around the shops or pick him up and hold him when I am standing in a store. When he throws a tantrum at home, I calmly take him to his room and shut the door until he calms down (usually a couple of minutes). He has to apologise, I forgive him and we move on. Can you please give me some advice on what to do in a store in this situation? I have tried ignoring him and going about my shopping - but then he starts to cry and carry on and it disturbs other shoppers so I pick him up. My husband works long hours and we don't have any relatives nearby that I can drop him off to when I need to shop. His legs are both strong and healthy - I want him to use them. Thanks
