2 yo with painted toenails

Question

Dear Dr. Rosemond,
Our 2 1/2 year grandson's mother is painting his toenails; first pink and now glittery. She has done it twice. After the first painting, we saw it at our house and Papa (his grandfather and my husband) and I decided to remove it, but didn't when Braxton, our grandson began to cry about the removal. So we stopped immediately, but are very concerned about the messages Braxton might be receiving regarding gender roles. We were particularly concerned about his reaction to a bit of toenail polish remover. We did say that toenail polish is for girls not boys and that he is a boy. We know we are grandparents and not his parents, but what would you think and/or do if it was happening to your grandson?
Thank you.
