travel meltdowns

Question

Do you have any tips on extended travel with children? We're going to a week-long family camp with our 3-year-old and 1-year-old. The kids love it, but by mid-week, every kid in camp seems to have a breakdown. (Sleepless nights, crying, and begging for home by the young ones, defiance and sulkiness by the 8-and-ups.)

Leaving early is not an option. We try to stick to our routine as much as possible, but with a strange bed, strange food, new activities, and all the excitement, there's very little routine left, beyond reading, naptime and bedtime.

Is there anything we're not doing that we should be doing, or should we just grit out teeth and bear it? (Also, any suggestions on handling meltdowns when sharing a cabin with strangers?)
