Diva thing?

Question

I'd love for you to address this topic either in a column or on this website: What in the world is going on with the whole "diva" thing? I have a two and a half year old daughter, and I don't understand why everyone wants to seem to promote this whole "diva" idea lately. Just a few examples...
1) From an article in Parenting magazine (Sept.2007) about being a good mom to toddlers: In regards to dealing with dressing difficulties, the advice is "Think of her as 'The Diva.' You may not dress The Diva; you may only suggest seasonably appropriate clothing. Understand that Divas must make their own fashion decisions because it reinforces their desire to be independent. Your role: Advise carefully." (Excuse me?)
2) In a costume catalog that I recently received in the mail, they had a two page spread for girls' costumes with the heading "Let Her Inner Diva Shine." On these pages, the catalog features different types of Diva costumes, as well as a "Hollywood Starlet" costume and a costume for an American Idol contestant. (Don't even get me started on how revealing and age inappropriate most Halloween costumes are these days...especially for girls.)
3) I recently saw a banner for a local business called "Lil' Diva's Day Out." Apparently they specialize in birthday parties for girls.
So...I'm just curious. What is your take on the whole "diva" thing? I'm assuming I'm not the only one completely disgusted.
