9-yo argues when told what to do

Question

Our 9-year-old son argues with us when we tell him to do something. An example: He was putting his cleats on while sitting on the couch and my husband told him to go outside to do that. He started to tell my husband that I had told him to go practice his baseball pitches. When my husband directed him to go out the front door he defiantly started to walk towards the back door, dragging his cleats across the floor. That sent my husband over the edge and he threw his own shoe out the door and yelled at him. Then, of course, my husband feels bad for over reacting. How do you get them to do what you tell them without sparking an argument?
