4 year old hysterics

My husband and I have used John Rosemond's techniques for years now which have worked perfectly for our 6 year old daughter. However our 4 1/2 year old son when told to do something in a direct tone completely melts down in hysterical crying. He is almost inconsolable even locking himself in his room but not necessarily throwing a "tantrum"(sometimes with a tantrum). It seems that these episodes have been becoming more frequent which is mind boggling since he is actually way past the terrible twos. Our question is what can be done or altered in our approach to prevent these daily melt downs for basic child directive actions such as "clean up your room now we will be back in 10 mins to see that you have done so."
Thank you for any help.
