2 year old : Meals

Question

My 20 month old son has recently taken to the idea that he can pick and choose what he wants to eat and throw a fit if he doesn't get what he likes. I do not supply options and I provide a wide variety of meals over the week. Tonight he screamed for a solid 45 minutes. He refused to touch it and wanted one of the cupcakes I had baked. I put him to bed early without him having a single bite to eat. Is this reasonable? If he wakes in the night from hunger should I just give him some milk? Also, should a similar policy be adopted for 4 year-olds that refuse to sit on their chairs during meal time? Also a fussy eater
