TODDLER SAYING PLEASE AND THANK YOU

Question

My son is 20 months old. He says please and thank you sometimes. When he does not I remind him to by saying “say please” or “say thank you” at times he refuses to say it. If he does not say please I do not give him the item he is wanting. If he does not say thank you I take it away. He tends to dig his heels in and won’t give in. For example, we were at my grandmothers house and he wanted a cookie, I said “say please, cookie please” he refused to do so but went on about the cookie for an hour. Is the method im doing correct or is there another approach I should take?
