Question
We have a 10 year old son and an 8 year old daughter. Our daughter has a genetic disease and is mildly delayed in language and cognitive skills, but she attends school and is in a regular education classroom. We don’t know what to do about our son and how he treats her. He will call her names, criticize her at every turn even for things he himself is known to do, and she hardly ever fights back. She is a happy girl and just doesn’t argue. When the two of them do fight, we separate them with no questions asked and put them both in their rooms. But in these other instances of name calling or teasing/mocking, we can’t stand it and end up getting involved. We do not want to rescue her but we also do not want him treating her this way. Are we supposed to stay out of it altogether no matter what? Or is there another way to handle his insults and teasing?
