Food battles with a 2 year old.

Question

We have a 2 year old son who is extremely picky, after feeling completely defeated by making and giving different meals for him from what the family was eating, we decided to only offer him what we were eating for dinner (which was rice, beans and squash). He refused and proceeded to refuse to eat for 28 hours before I broke down and gave him applesauce. He cried all night every hour and cried most of that day. Since then his picky eating and my willingness to give in has become so much worse. He throws enormous fits when he doesn't like what I set in front of him (even if it's a food that he previously "approved" of) During this season he was mostly non verbal but does have 90% understanding.
What do I do? Do I reattempt only offering him what we are eating?
Thank you so much for your time and advice!
