Navigating the Bedtime War Zone

Question

When my daughter was 13 months old I decided to go back to work so we slept trained her. It took about 2-3 nights and she was sleeping through the night.

A year later she started waking up again and wanted to sleep with me. As a working mom who's husband is out of town a lot I allowed it so I could survive the next day. Eventually it turned into full on co-sleeping which I never planned to do.

In October, after she turned 3, she was scheduled for a tonsillectomy and we assumed after that she would start sleeping better. We had the surgery and got her a twin (big girl) bed. The surgery hasn't stopped her from waking up. I lay in her bed with her until she falls asleep but she ends up in my bed around 2AM.

I would love to be able to tuck her in and leave her in the room and she stays there until the next morning. She is very difficult, screams and cries to no end if she doesn't get her way. It stresses out our 10 year as well as us. I'm not sure how to handle this without it becoming a war zone at bedtime.
