Sleeping in your own bed.

Question

Our 11 year old son has been afraid of sleeping in his room alone for essentially since he moved from his crib to a big bed. He and his older sister (now 13) shared a bedroom for several years but even then when they had bunk beds, he would climb in her bed and sleep with her. Since she now sleeps in her own room, we then would lay down with him until he went to sleep and then go to our room but if/when he woke he would come into our room and my wife or I would go back with him into his bedroom and try again, or eventually just sleep with him. He is also fearful of even going upstairs by himself. Now the problem has morphed to one of us, almost always my wife as she goes to bed earlier than me, letting him sleep in the bed with her, and the other parent sleeping in his room. Help!
