Two steps forward, one step back

Question

Our third child is 3.5 years old and we potty trained him (with some struggles!) starting at 21 months. He eventually "got it" and was pretty much independent going potty at home with the exception of wiping his bottom. In the past couple months however, he is having lots of pee accidents, doesn't let me know and doesn't care that he is running around with wet pants. I only notice sometimes when buckling in and out of car seat or helping him with pj's, etc. He isn't resistant to going when we tell him to, but as of late, he is having accidents within an hour of using the potty. This is making a potty bell difficult. I am increasingly frustrated with him and not sure how to get him back on track. Advice please!!!
