Question
My daughter is 22 months old, turning 2 in a few months.
I've noticed that when I'm in a room with her, she shows little interest in me as she plays with her toys. Which is good.
However, when I attempt to leave the room - for example, if I need to use the bathroom - she tries to block me from leaving by grabbing my legs and pulling me back.
I usually just sit back down and wait for her to become distracted, but the same thing happens: she bolts for my legs when she sees any movement toward the door. This can go on for an hour, and when she finally notices that I've slipped out, she'll throw a tantrum. The tantrum lasts about 5 minutes before she becomes distracted with a toy and seems fine after that.
I don't really understand what's going on since she shows so little interest in me when I am in the room. In fact, I'll try to hold her and she'll wiggle out to go play. But when I try to leave the room for some reason, she doesn't like it.
She seems to display different emotions when she clings to my legs from one time to the next. Sometimes she giggles as she does it, sometimes she seems angry (groaning, yelling or stomping), sometimes she cries, sometimes she seems to do it just out of habit because she saw me by the door and is only halfway paying attention to grabbing at my leg.
Not sure what's going on and the best way to handle it.
