Getting Back on Track

Question

Two weeks ago, our power went out at 3 am and the bang of the transformer blowing jolted everyone awake. Since then, our son (5.5 years old) has called us into his room in the middle of the night (often multiple times) 13 out of 14 nights (saying he’s scared and wants someone to lie with him). We’ve tried sitting with him, consequences (taking something away if he continues to call us in), early bedtimes if he calls us in multiple times, but nothing seems to nip it. We have given in and slept with him the last three nights (out of sheer exhaustion and needing sleep). Our son has never been a great sleeper, but we were on a long, beautiful streak of sleeping through the night before this happened. How do we get him to stop calling us in/begging one of us to sleep with him?
