Teenager : Responsible media use

Question

My son is almost 14. We don't allow video games. He does not have a cell phone. We restrict the amount of time that he can spend on the internet, and keep close tabs on what he is doing online. I worry about the destructive influeces of the media. However, I also realize that the media is a huge part of the world that kids are growing in now, and that I need to teach them how to use it responsibly. At almost 14, I think my son needs a little more freedom with media choices. How much freedom should I give? Should I relax my rules about video games? How can I keep it from becoming a time waster?
