Seperation Anxiety

Question

Our kindergartner (6 year old boy) cries and clings to our leg every morning at school drop off. His teacher notes that he is fine within a minute of our departure. He also cried and clung to us during the preschool years. If his teacher is not at the door to intercept him it is very difficult for us to leave. We arrive at school early and try to say a quick good-bye. He carries a family picture in his backpack. We were hoping that he would be transitioning more smoothly by now. Is this a learned behavior at this point? We would greatly appreciate any suggestions how we could proactively manage the drop off at school.
