5 yro needs too much attention in school

Question

I have a 5 year old son who began kindergarten this fall. His teacher has reported several times that he requires a lot of one on one guidance to complete tasks in the classroom. She has also said that he will not start tasks until she or the teacher assistant come and check on him. She feels that the guidance he needs is not due to a lack of understanding the task but has more to do with his confidence in doing the task correctly. What can we do to decrease the amount of hand holding he's needing? I know when he gets to first grade, much more independence will be expected of him. When I really think about it, my husband and I have probably created this probably by doing TOO much for him at home. Should I just tell the teacher to stop checking on him so much?
