Spiritual Caregivers

Question

Thanks for your column. Please keep it up. I pass many of them on to my children, two of whom are now parents.

My question is about your statement that "no consistent body of research done by...confirms the reliable efficacy of any psychological therapy" (column entitled "Is psychological therapy necessary?). I have just rejoined a ministry at my church entitled "Spiritual Care." Spiritual Care "provides a safe place and a person to talk to, one-on-one through life’s challenging issues. It’s confidential and completely free. Spiritual Caregivers are trained individuals who are passionate about coming alongside you, offering grace and hope in times of need." I initially participated and, after talking to three individuals, felt I didn't benefit them much. That was perhaps five years ago.

My question is: are we likely wasting our time in this ministry based on the research you have reviewed?
