Question

We had our ten year old fifth grader on restriction for six weeks. For us, restriction means no electronics, no sleepovers, no dirt bike, etc. In this time we saw his grades improve, attitude improve and we seemed to be headed in the right direction. He had acceptable grades (As and Bs) and good daily reports at the holiday break so he was off his restriction. We thought, lesson learned. Now we are 4 weeks into the new semester and we are basically back where we started. He’s not turning in work again, has Cs and Ds, arguing at home and on a daily basis tells us he’s just stupid and doesn’t care about his grades. We placed him on restriction and daily reports again, told his teacher he can not have extra time or redo opportunities. Is this a roller coaster we will never get off? How do we help him change his mindset? We are both public school teachers and see the slippery slope this mindset has for students.
