Letting toddlers play alone?

Question

My daughter is 2 years old and recently I noticed that she doesn't play on her own very much anymore and is often looking for me and my wife to entertain her. I set up her room with a few things to play with that engage her imagination, blocks and coloring books and the like. I put her in there to play on her own and closed the door while I sat in the office down the hall with the baby monitor on hand. I have only done this once so far but my wife does not like it and thinks we may be damaging her psychologically. I just want my daughter to learn to entertain herself with her imagination. Am I wrong for doing this? Are there ways I can modify this strategy to make it better?
