False Diagnoses

Question

HI John I enjoyed your article "Are many cases of autism wrongly diagnosed?"

You were right on the mark when you said "kids grow out of these many of these things".

An acquaintance's grandson was diagnosed with "autism" at age 2 or 3 and he received some "in home" professional help by a social worker and it seems like there were other things such as some kind of pre-IEP (individual educational program) and maybe even some professional speech services, I don't remember all of the various services he received.

Fast forward to this year and the little boy is 5 or 6 and they are being told the child no longer has autism.

How was it "cured"? No one knows.

Again, this is a very interesting topic.

A side issue is how difficult this is for schools in trying to deal with kids who are different and no one knows what to do with them, especially the kids who are violent, anti-social, etc.

Thanks again for your books, articles, radio show, and podcasts.
