How Much Attention?

Love your radio program and love your philosophy.
But I'm concerned about something you said. It is that parents don't have to and shouldn't focus their attention on their child but on each other and that (paraphrasing) when you were a child you didn't even want your parents to focus on you and you did everything you could to keep that from happening (by doing things the right way and not getting into trouble).

My concern is that if the only time a parent pays any attention to their child is when they do something wrong then won't the child who needs more attention purposely do something wrong just to get that needed attention?
Shouldn't parents notice when the child is doing good and shouldn't they compliment the child when they notice it at least occasionally?
