Micromanaging 3 1/2 Year Old?

Question

Every so often, when my 3 and a half- year-old boy gets in trouble and is disciplined, it seems the discipline escalates his behavior and he tries to do something even worse than what he was originally in trouble for. Sometimes this goes on for several rounds, with him finding worse and worse things to do, before he is finally subdued. I would like to "nip" this behavior in the "bud" at step one, but haven't had success yet. Recently, after several rounds, I sent him to his room (no toys in there), and he pulled his mattress of his bed, along with the rail and blankets. How can I end this at the beginning?
