Teaching Toddlers Independence

Question

My son is 2 years old and we have been working on independent play. We have paired down toys and made sure they are creative ones you recommend and eliminated most tv. He does well playing alone with his dad. Problem is as soon as I'm present (his mom) he starts to whine and crawl in my lap. He wants me to do nothing but sit on the floor and entertain him. I've said "go play" with a gentle nudge in the toy direction but he doesn't understand that. I've tried playing with him for a bit and then tried to sneak away when he is engrossed but he always notices and chases after me. Is there a way I can get him to understand and not be so reliant on me for entertainment? Is there a limit to parent play time?
