Potty Training Takes Time

Question

How do I encourage potty training independence in my 24 month old? I take him to the potty when he wakes up, before naps and bed, and when we're out. But I make him do all the steps involved with the least amount of help from me. He always produces something. But if he doesn't have instructions from me or the potty bell, he won't tell me he needs to go. What am I doing wrong? I'm pretty sure you could say I'm sure im the one who is trained! We are 2 months in and I have tried going back to square one multiple times with just underwear and no cues, and he just pees or poos all over. How do I transition him to telling me (or better yet taking himself to the potty). It seems like he's being lazy and I'm not sure how to challenge him to be independent.
