Bright High School Student Losing All Drive to Succeed

Question

Mr. Rosemond says, "Ask a child no questions, the child will tell you no lies." Sometimes, we ask no questions (no one does) and she still lies. She just comes up with these big whoppers out of nowhere. I think it is to make herself feel better. But I still don't know what to do about it. Also, she is currently a junior in high school and shows no initiative to make plans for the future, to study or take ACT/SAT tests, apply for scholarships or look at colleges. We talk to her about this, but it doesn't seem we are getting through. What should we be doing to help her? She is smart -- was invited to Duke University in 7th grade for making a 34 (out of 36 in reading) on ACT and last summer participated in the Governor's Honors Program in Engineering. Now, she seems to have no drive at all to do anything. What, if anything, do we do at this point? As her mother, I am frustrated. My husband says just let her fail; she'll eventually figure it out. I don't want to fight with my husband or my daughter. Any suggestions for me?
