Monitoring Cell Phone Texts

Question

We recently gave my son his own cell phone. He's been asking for one for two years. A lot of the kids in his class did have one when they were 8 years old, and I was shocked that they had a cell phone at such a young age. We thought he was ready to have one this year. I check his phone every night because he can text on it and I wanted to make sure everything was ok. My son has good friends but recently he added a new friends phone number on his phone that I do not know. His friend sent a text with a lot of bad words in it. He was not bullying my son. Unfortunately, I guess some kids talk like that in their sentences. I am very upset about this, of course. I have talked with my son about doing the right things, and I want to protect him from this and told him that this boy doesn't seem to be a good kid. My son told me that he doesn't like when the kids in his school talk to each other and say bad words. I have talked with his teacher about the kids, and she said that's how kids are these days from hearing it from others and she did nothing about it. I don't know if I should take his phone away. How should I handle this?
