Question
Another thirteen year old, a girl, is spiraling down in imitation of the thirteen year old boy. Her adopted brother but not her bio brother. She is labeled developmentally disabled, borderline IQ, mentally disturbed, and a host of other labels. We have emptied her room in the past and slowly added items back. Totally out of character for her, she slapped my arm as I walked by her this morning. She has basically been able to stop her meltdown but is still very on edge. She then told me I hit her. I was ignoring the slap, figuring she was trying for the attention her brother had received, but I wanted her to acknowledge she had hit me. Sooo...empty her room again? Back to square one again? Or should I be treating a mentally disturbed child differently?
