My daughter, who will be 3 in April, has been having horrible tantrums when she isn't getting her way. I know this is pretty typical behavior for her age and we're consistent, firm and loving with her.
My question is this- lately, when she is put into her room because she's done something wrong (i.e. hitting her brother, or supposed to be taking a nap), she cries in her room but lays on the floor by the door and kicks the door over and over. Of course, I don't want her to get hurt, and it's hard to listen to the pounding over and over again. I usually give her a few minutes, go up to her room and tell her that she should calm down and to not kick the door and then leave again. Sometimes I am up there several times before she finally gives up and stops kicking. I don't leave her up there for long periods of time, but a few minutes usually seems to get the point across. The hard part is when she wakes up in the middle of the night and throws a fit and this pounding is going on at 2 or 3am and she is waking the whole house up because of the screaming and pounding. I'm not sure if she's having a night terror or what, but sometimes she gets mad when my husband goes in the room and she wants me instead.
Any suggestions on how to otherwise handle this? Thanks in advance.
