Teaching a Teen Empathy, Part 2

Question

Love the idea about having our teen volunteer consistently at a local nursing home or other area of interest to engender empathy that may help her bring that quality to the family as well. I had the perfect opportunity to share this idea when a college admissions counselor said looking at volunteerism and work outside the family were two factors that were high in their admissions process. When I mentioned it every so casually to our teen, she became irate, says we are trying to micromanage her time (her favorite word to throw back at us since stumbling upon one of your articles) and has all but refused to look into the matter, saying she doesn't have time, does plenty of volunteering with church all ready, etc. Suggestions?
