Toddler Sleep Changes

Our 31 month-old daughter has been a great sleeper up until a couple months ago. She has become afraid of shadows and wakes up during the night (sometimes more than once) crying because of her fears. She asks to sleep in our bed (which we have never allowed), and eventually we can usually calm her down and get her back to sleep, but we are exhausted. We have tried turning off the night light to where it's totally dark, and turning on a bigger light to alleviate the shadows, but she says it's either too dark or too bright. Any suggestions? Would transitioning her from a crib to a bed help as she may feel more in control? Thanks!
